Sustainability

The sustainability of our hides begins with the provenance of the raw material. The hides are sourced exclusively from local cattle in Southern Germany and are a by-product of the meat industry.

Then there is the process of working the leather. Rather than settling for a conventional but earth-polluting method using chrome and other heavy metals, our choice is to rely on a tanning practice which is 100% sustainable. This is based on the use of entirely organic materials, extracted from natural bark and wood. It is the oldest-known technique for tanning, and in addition to its eco-friendly credentials, the result is an exquisite, multi-toned leather that will age beautifully.

Last but not least, sustainability extends also to the treatment of our leathers. The hides are greased with natural fats such as tallow and fish oil, resulting in a leather surface which has a smooth, natural feel to it, that rarely requires re-greasing and is especially hard-wearing for a life-long use.

Outstanding Quality

Quality encompasses each single aspect of the Ecoskin Coll’R & Leas’H

• Leather: we exclusively use the hide from the shoulder. This is a naturally soft, one piece, full-grain cowhide, with a thickness that varies in between 3.5 to 4.0 mm. The key difference here is that we use a single-piece leather swathe rather than several strips of leather bonded together.

• The term “full-grain” denotes the highest quality of leather available. It is used to describe the leather with the complete grain intact. The surface retains the imprints original to the hide and the animal it was taken from and is not altered in any way, except for the removal of the hair present on the skin of the hide. Since no finishing is made to the grain of the leather, although there may be imperfections on the leather, it retains all of the original texture and markings. Full-grain leather is the strongest and most durable leather available. Additionally, the leather will absorb moisture and oils from handling over time, and thus develop a distinctive patina over the years. Due to its rarity and quality, full-grain leather is one of the most expensive forms of leather available.

• Coll‘R buckle & leash ring: these are available in a choice of high-quality metal alloy or solid brass. Double stitching around the buckle & leash ring ensures durability over time.
• Leas’H carabiner & rings: the carabiner & rings can be had in a choice of heavy-duty solid stainless steel or solid brass. All carabiners are of the scissor snap (also known as trigger snap) variety, as we believe these are easier to use and less prone to sticking.

Uniqueness

Rather than using an off-the-shelf, readily available (and cheaper-to-source) buckle and leash ring, we designed both parts in-house, for an added touch of elegant exclusivity. In addition, each Coll’R & Leas’H feature a unique MAELSON branded logo stud in matching metal alloy or brass.
